“Through the active or passive production, dissemination, and shaping of everyday content on social media, our discursive context is gradually disciplined by the affirmative big data of likes and filled with a seductively smooth chaos.” This is how contemporary philosophers, including Byung-Chul Han, describe the “transparency society.” Yet the “distinctive subjectivity” embodied by outstanding artists continues to maintain a distance from that of the general subject. By establishing their own artistic languages, they open up new spaces within our existing worldviews, creating fluidity and possibilities for the expansion and renewal of our inner lives.

Painting has an ancient lineage and has, in a sense, acquired an ontology of its own through the act of “departure.” As we travel across the globe and surf the transcultural networks of the digital world, the boundaries between different civilizations and aesthetic traditions are juxtaposed, folded, and dissolved before our eyes, before colliding, intertwining, and evolving within our suspended inner worlds.

Contemporary painting represents a renewed anchoring of human values by contemporary painters. What appears to be an illusory growth unfolding in seemingly arbitrary directions is, in fact, the painter’s deliberate departure from the alienation of the traditional subject in the creative process—a spiritual resolve to confront the blank canvas alone, in the present moment defined by the limitations of the body and the specificity of time and space. Off the Beaten Path is both an appearance and an ontology: a solitary and courageous elegy for painting’s departure, and, at the same time, a resounding hymn to the vitality of life.
