The exhibition takes its title from a poem of the same name by the poet He Qifang, written in 1942, the year of the Yan’an Rectification Movement. The poem serves as a point of departure, evoking the profound transformations in everyday life that accompany periods of historical transition. While reflecting on the weight of history, the exhibition remains grounded in present-day realities, particularly in the imaginative connections forged with the past.
The works on view trace the ways in which the circumstances of our time have reverberated through everyday life, prompting various forms of departure. These are expressed through the subtle sense of estrangement between individuals and their surrounding environments, the surreal emerging within the real, and the extraordinary temporal and spatial dimensions that unfold within the fabric of everyday life.
